Visiting Clergy from Ukrainian Synodal Administration for Chaplaincies Arrive in Philadelphia
November 2, 2018
Philadelphia, PA – Very Reverend Bohdan Zhoba, Rector and Honorary Chaplain, and Thomas J. Hanney, President, Church Council, announce the arrival of a Delegation from the Ukrainian Synodal Administration for Chaplaincies on Friday, November 2, 2018, in Philadelphia.
The Delegation has been blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Philaret to visit Philadelphia and Washington, DC. The group includes Metropolitan John, Father Taras Melnik, Yaroslav Shevchenko, Alexander Efremenko and Anton Pushko.
Their itinerary while in the United States includes blessing the commencement of St. Nicholas Church’s annual PIEROGI FESTIVAL on Saturday, November 3, at 12:00 noon. The Festival is the Church’s biggest fundraiser, a 2-day event that concludes at 5:00 pm on Sunday, November 4. With free admission and parking, attendees can enjoy home-made pierogis and other ethnic foods, a beer garden, holiday shopping from a variety of vendors, baked goods and non-stop live music.
Metropolitan John will serve Divine Liturgy with Very Reverend Bohdan Zhoba, Rector, and Father Deacon Daniel Terrazas at 9:30 AM on Sunday, November 4, 2018, in St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church. The Church celebrated its 100th Anniversary last year, and His Excellency, Ukrainian Ambassdor to the United States Valeriy Chaly was the guest of honor at the centennial event. Metropolitan John is the first visiting Bishop from the Kyivan Patriarchate to St. Nicholas Eastern Orthodox Church, the Stavropigia of His Holiness Patriarch Philaret. Metropolitan John has been blessed by His Holiness Patriarch Philaret to administer Communion to the faithful.
Following Divine Liturgy, the Delegation will participate in the second day of the PIEROGI FESTIVAL and will end the festive event with a prayer and a memorial to all of the brave immigrants and fallen soldiers who selflessly gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy in the United States.
From Philadelphia, the Delegation travels to Washington, DC, where they will attend the U.S. Military Chaplains Association (MCA) annual conference in Arlington, Virginia, from Monday, November 5, through Friday, November 7, 2018. The MCA serves military chaplains around the world. The Ukrainian Delegation’s participation will further the MCA’s goals and enrich the experience of all attendees.
The Ukrainian Synodal Administration for Chaplaincies was organized in Ukraine in 2014. The National Guard of Ukraine (NGU) was the first among all state force organizations that officially introduced chaplain service. Currently, nearly 50 chaplains are employed in the NGU. It was the wish of the chaplains to wear unique cassocks when not deployed, and a generous personal donation from Very Reverend Bohdan Zhoba made possible the manufacture of these custom cassocks. A mobile church is another project that would greatly aid the Ukrainian chaplains who enter conflict zones unarmed.
